Travel Insurance Explained

Flight cancelled? That's ₹50k of non-refundable bookings gone. Medical emergency in Thailand? Hospital bill: ₹2.5L. Baggage lost? ₹20k on emergency purchases for a 5-day trip.

Travel insurance covers exactly these. You pay ₹500–₹3,000 per trip. If a medical emergency, trip cancellation or lost baggage happens, the insurer pays.

Types of Travel Insurance

Single-Trip Insurance

One trip, domestic or international. ₹300–₹800 per domestic trip (1–30 days); ₹800–₹3,000 international (1–90 days).

International Travel Insurance

Covers medical treatment, evacuation and lost documents abroad. Price depends on destination: SE Asia is cheaper (₹800–₹1,200), Europe and the USA cost more (₹2k–₹3k).

Annual Multi-Trip Insurance

All your trips for a year at ₹2,000–₹5,000/year. Better value if you travel 3+ times a year—frequent flyers, business travelers.

What Travel Insurance Covers

Medical emergencies: hospital bills abroad, emergency dental, evacuation to your home country. Critical for international trips—treatment in the USA or Europe can run ₹10L+.

Trip cancellation: flight cancelled, you fall sick before departure, a death in the family—non-refundable costs reimbursed, typically ₹30k–₹5L (the trip amount).

Lost/delayed baggage: lost bags compensated, up to ₹1L compensation. Delayed 12+ hours → clothes and essentials reimbursed.

Travel delay: flights delayed 12+ hours pay ₹500–₹2,000, plus hotel and food for the extended stay.

Lost documents: emergency passport replacement and visa costs covered.

What Travel Insurance DOESN'T Cover

  • Pre-existing medical conditions (unless declared and accepted)
  • High-risk activities—skydiving, scuba—without an adventure add-on
  • Travel during known unrest, wars, or pandemics
  • Claims involving alcohol or drug use
  • Travel against medical advice

Domestic vs International

Domestic: ₹300–₹800 per trip, for flights and trains within India. Evacuation rarely matters—hospitals are nearby.

International: ₹800–₹3,000 per trip. Evacuation cover is the critical piece: getting flown back to India can cost ₹10L+. Destination drives price—Europe costs more than SE Asia.

Real-World Scenarios

Domestic flight cancellation: trip cost ₹30k (flight + hotel). The flight cancels. Without insurance, you lose ₹30k. With a ₹500 policy: ₹30k refunded.

Medical emergency abroad: dengue hospitalization in Thailand, bill ₹2.5L. A ₹2,000 international policy covers it. Without one, you pay it all—plus evacuation if it comes to that.

Whether YOUR policy covers adventure sports, pre-existing conditions or your specific destination is written in its fine print, not in any guide. Generic advice ends here—check what your policy actually says before you fly.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance worth it?

Yes, especially for international travel. ₹2,000 premium can save you ₹2.5L+ in medical emergencies. For domestic trips, ₹500 insurance is worth it if you have non-refundable bookings worth ₹20k+.

What's covered if I miss a flight?

If you miss flight due to covered reasons (illness, accident, family death), trip cancellation coverage reimburses non-refundable costs. If you simply oversleep, not covered.

What if I have a chronic disease?

Pre-existing conditions must be declared. Some insurers cover them (higher premium), some exclude them. If you don't declare and claim for that condition, claim is denied.

Does travel insurance cover Covid?

Most policies now cover Covid-19 medical expenses. Check policy wording—coverage may include: medical treatment, quarantine costs, trip cancellation due to Covid diagnosis.

What's covered for adventure activities?

Standard policies exclude high-risk activities (scuba diving, skiing, mountaineering). Need adventure sports add-on (₹500–₹1,000 extra). Without add-on, injuries from these activities are not covered.

Can I buy insurance after booking?

Yes, but must buy before trip starts. Some insurers allow buying up to departure date, but buying early is better (covers trip cancellation from booking date).

What if I need medical care?

Contact insurer's 24/7 helpline immediately. They'll guide you to network hospitals (cashless) or reimburse expenses. Keep all medical bills, reports. Submit claim within 30 days of return.

Is pregnancy covered?

Pregnancy-related claims usually excluded (complications from existing pregnancy). Some policies cover complications if pregnancy is < 32 weeks. Check policy wording.

What if I travel during lockdown/unrest?

Travel to countries with active travel advisories/warnings is usually excluded. If you travel against government advice and get stuck, insurance may not cover rescue/evacuation costs.

How do I claim?

Report incident immediately (24 hours). Collect documents (bills, reports, police FIR if theft). Submit claim form + documents to insurer within 30 days of return. Processing: 15–30 days.
